The Future of EU Free Movement

The Edinburgh Europa Research Group is pleased to invite you to our first annual seminar:

Europa Research Seminar 2015: The Future of EU Free Movement

Thursday 26 March 2015
2pm – 5.30pm

The University of Edinburgh | Holyrood Road
Charteris Land | Room 3.04

The seminar is immediately followed by a panel discussion on:
Britain and the European Union: 2015-2020

The free movement of persons within the EU is the subject of particular political controversy. In the UK, proposals have been put forward aimed at limiting the number of EU citizens working and residing in Britain and restricting their access to social assistance. The UK is not the only EU Member State seeking to exercise greater control over its borders, as the prevalence of transitional arrangements for accession states demonstrates. What’s more, these political trends appear to have ramifications for EU law, as attempts to circumscribe equal treatment provisions or to deport EU citizens residing in a host Member State are increasingly accepted by the Court of Justice of the European Union. This seminar aims to interrogate these trends further.

Prof Niamh Nic Shuibhne (University of Edinburgh)
Dr Floris de Witte (LSE)
